The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has submitted a $42million Social Media in Strategic Communication (SMISC) program aimed at monitoring social media networks, identifying social influencers and manipulating flows of information through those channels.
We discuss the how advances in this area will eventually lead to the literal programming of individual minds, filter bubbles that will restrict and consciously direct the information you consume, and the manipulation of opinion and behaviour. Though there are definite upsides as well!
